BUTCHART GARDENS

It all began with one woman’s vision and passion

The Butchart Gardens is a 122-year-old world famous 55-acre display garden located in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia. Created by Jennie Butchart, and still privately owned and operated by the family, The Gardens was designated a National Historic Site of Canada, in 2004 for its one hundredth birthday.

Nestled just north of Victoria on the Saanich Peninsula, Butchart Gardens stands as one of Canada’s most celebrated horticultural attractions. What began as a depleted limestone quarry in the early 20th century was transformed into a lush, world-renowned garden through the vision of Jennie Butchart. Her husband, Robert Pim Butchart, had established a cement plant on the site in 1904, but as the quarry was exhausted, Jennie saw opportunity rather than decline. Starting in 1909, she began converting the scarred landscape into what would become the iconic Sunken Garden, gradually expanding the grounds into a series of themed gardens that today span over 55 acres.

Over the decades, Butchart Gardens has evolved into a National Historic Site of Canada and a must-visit destination for travelers from around the world. Visitors are drawn to its meticulously designed landscapes, including the Italian Garden, Japanese Garden, and Rose Garden, each offering a unique sensory experience. The gardens showcase a stunning variety of seasonal blooms, from vibrant tulips in spring to rich dahlias in late summer, making every visit distinct. Its combination of natural beauty, thoughtful design, and historical significance has made it one of the most photographed and admired gardens globally.

The magic of Butchart Gardens reaches its peak during the holiday season, when the entire property is transformed into a dazzling Christmas display. From late November through early January, thousands of twinkling lights illuminate the gardens, creating a festive atmosphere that feels almost storybook-like. Pathways wind through glowing trees, decorated arches, and whimsical displays, while traditional Christmas music fills the air. The Sunken Garden becomes a focal point of the celebration, with dramatic lighting that highlights its depth and structure in a completely different way than during the day.

The Christmas season at Butchart Gardens has become a cherished tradition for both locals and tourists, drawing visitors from across Canada and beyond. Families gather to stroll through the illuminated grounds, enjoy seasonal treats, and even glide across the outdoor skating rink set up during the festivities. The Twelve Days of Christmas display—featuring creative visual interpretations of the classic carol—is especially popular, offering a playful and interactive element for guests of all ages. This festive transformation not only enhances the gardens’ appeal but solidifies its reputation as a year-round destination, where every season brings its own unique charm and unforgettable experience.ph here.
